Instagram Strategy for Businesses:What Matters Now and What to Stop Wasting Time On!
This month I have delivered yet another training session on Instagram. The group were mixed, a blend of those new to Instagram and those who have been using it for a while but were not getting the results they wanted.
Instagram is still one of the most valuable social media channels for businesses, but the way to get results has changed. It is no longer enough to post attractive images, add a few hashtags and hope the algorithm does the rest. You need a more strategic approach, focused on visibility, trust, engagement and conversion.
What Matters Now
Those getting the best results on Instagram are creating content with purpose. They understand their audience, they show up consistently, and they use the platform to educate, inspire and build relationships.
Short-form video continues to be important, especially Reels, but it should not be content for the sake of content. A strong Reel answers a question, solves a problem, shows personality or gives people a reason to remember your brand.
Carousels are also performing well because they encourage people to spend more time with your content. They are great for sharing tips, explaining services, answering FAQs or telling a story in stages.
Stories remain valuable for connection. They are where you can be more informal, share behind-the-scenes updates, ask questions and keep the brand visible to warm audiences.
What to Focus On
A good Instagram strategy should include:
- Clear content pillars linked to your business goals
- Reels that educate, entertain or show expertise
- Carousels that provide useful, saveable information
- Stories that build familiarity and trust
- Strong captions with a clear message or call to action
- Regular engagement with followers, customers and peers
- A profile that clearly explains who you help and how
What to Stop Wasting Time On
Many businesses are still too focused on vanity metrics. Likes are nice, but they are not the full story. Shares, profile visits, website clicks, enquiries and DMs are better indicators of whether your content is working. And don’t forget – a sale as a result of social activity is the end goal!
It is time to stop posting without a plan. Random content leads to random results. Every post should have a purpose, whether that is awareness, engagement, authority building or lead generation.
