Keywords and SEO.

What are Keywords?

Keywords are the words and phrases that people use on Google to find the website that best matches their requirements.  If those words are not included on your website, then there is little chance that the searcher will discover you.  That is why it is so important to check that you have included all relevant words and phrases on the website.

Advice on Selecting Keywords

The first thing to do is to create a list of all the words and phrases that are associated with your product and service.  This will be an easy task for you as this is your business and your area of expertise.  Write these down as you will be checking that they are included on your website later.

Then consider the language your customer uses to speak about your business.  Do they use different words to describe your services?  For example, I might ‘go to the cinema’, yet you may ‘see a movie’ – same thing, different words.   Add these new terms to your list and ensure they are used on your website.

You can do further research on keywords by checking out competitor websites, what words appear there that are not on your website?  Then perhaps use the Google Keyword Tool in Google Ads or even use Google to see related searches for new words.

Where Should the Keywords Go?

The keywords should be ‘naturally sprinkled’ throughout your website.  Do not be tempted to ‘stuff’ your website by using them too often as this will have a negative result.  Ensure all your content reads well for a human and you will probably get the frequency right.  Put them across all pages, not just the home page.  Remember, you will also use your keywords in your page titles and when optimising your website images.

SEO Future Proofing your Website

Keywords are an important part of SEO (search engine optimization).  To keep your website up to date always remember to add the latest phrases or any newly discovered words.  Good SEO is all about having original relevant content on your website for the visitor.  Using the right keywords throughout your website will be part of this strategy.  Remember, write down those keywords and then double check they are actually on your website.
